Professor Victor Dzau, MD, is Chancellor Emeritus for Health Affairs, James B. Duke Distinguished Professorship of Medicine and Director of Mandel Center at Duke University, and past President of the U.S. National Academy of Medicine (NAM). Previously, he was professor and chairman of medicine at both Harvard and Stanford Universities. He is recognized globally for a highly decorated career as a physician scientist, administrator, and leader. His research laid the foundation for lifesaving drugs known as ACE inhibitors. He also pioneered gene therapy for vascular disease. Dzau has devoted his career to scientific innovation, global health, and equity. At the NAM, he has launched initiatives on a global health risk framework, human gene editing, and climate change and health.
Dzau has served in advisory and leadership capacities for governments, academia, and international bodies, including G7 and G20; he chairs scientific advisory boards for biomedical research councils and institutes, including in the United Kingdom, Singapore, Japan, and Canada. Among his many honors are Order of the Rising Sun from Japan, Honorary Citizen of Singapore, Gustav Nylin Medal from the Swedish Royal College of Medicine, and Henry Freisen International Prize. He has received 24 honorary doctorates.
