STATE OF ART OF PREDICTIVE GENOMICS IN ESTONIA AND GENOME OF EUROPE
Abstract:
As healthcare systems face mounting challenges from aging populations and increasing disease burdens, innovative approaches are critical to improving outcomes and sustainability. Personalized medicine (PM) offers transformative potential by tailoring prevention, diagnosis, and treatment to individual characteristics. My presentation will focus on key advancements of PM in Estonia including implementation of genetics into national breast cancer screening program. I will also discuss the importance of understanding societal perceptions of PM to ensure effective communication and uptake.
Biography:
Reedik Mägi is a professor of bioinformatics at the University of Tartu’s Institute of Genomics. His academic journey has been marked by a focus on genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and pharmacogenetics, exploring the genetic underpinnings of complex traits and diseases. His work often leverages data from Estonian biobanks to enhance the understanding of genetic risk factors, contributing significantly to the global effort in personalized medicine. Prof. Mägi is the head of the Centre of Excellence of Personalised Medicine in Estonia, where he leads efforts to advance disease risk prediction and precision healthcare. He is actively involved in numerous international consortia and working groups focused on identifying genetic risk factors for complex diseases and translating these findings into clinical practice. Through his leadership and collaboration, Mägi has significantly contributed to global progress in personalized medicine.
